Description of the places to visit

Major Plaza of Lima- This Plaza was established during
the Spanish founding of Lima. It has served to mark
some of the most important events in the history of Peru.
The Spanish foundation of Lima marks one of the
important successes in the history of Peru. Originally
this area had small stores and businesses. It was also
used for both bull fights and for the execution of
prisoners during the Spanish Inquisition. Later in the
colonial period a central pillar of bronze was used for
announcements as it is even today. In 1821 the
independence of Peru was announced here. Along the
sides the Plaza are the Governmental Palace, the
Catholic Cathedral, Archbishop’s Palace, and the
buildings of the Municipality of Lima.

Church and convent of San Francisco: This beautiful
example of colonial architecture was constructed in the
17th century from blue tiles. It has many halls, an
amphitheater, patios, and a spectacular library. It is an
important site of religious art , and the Hall of Zuraran.
The basilica is constructed over a network of
subterranean galleries and catacombs, which served as
a cemetery during the colonial period and can now be
viewed by the public.

Museum of the Central Bank and Reserve of Peru:  In the
central historical district of Lima we visit one of the most
beautiful buildings, the Central Reserve Bank of Peru.
Here we can appreciate the various treasures of Peru
including a select exposition of gold and ceramic
objects. We also find textiles of diverse pre-Columbian
cultures including those of the Incas. This museum is
sure to captivate and impress our visitors.

National Museum of archaeology, anthropology, and
history of Peru. The national Museum is housed in an
ultra modern building. Here are conserved famous
examples and monuments of stone from the early Peru.
Also important textile collections are shown from the pre-
ceramic  periods before, during, and after the Incas.
There is an important collection of gold and silver metal
from antique Peru as well. And in a new wing a resume of
100 years of the Imperial Incas illustrated virtually.

Museum of Larco Herrera: this 17th-century mansion was
constructed like a pre-Columbian pyramid. This fabulous
Ms. M. has an exquisite collection of gold and silver
from ancient Peru along with the famous salon of erotic
art. The carved stones on exhibit are some of the best in
the world. And they allow the visitor to appreciate these
treasures up close. More than 45,000 archaeological
pieces can be studied. This museum contains the largest
private collection of pre-Columbian arc which exists in
the world.

The Museo de la Nacion is one of
the must-see Lima attractions and
the best Peru museum to visit for
those wanting to learn more about
Peruvian history. There are plenty
of Lima attractions to keep tourists
occupied, but a trip to the biggest
and best museum in Peru is sure
to enhance any visitor’s overall
appreciation of the country. As the
premier Peru museum, the Museo
de la Nacion is a showcase for
many of the country’s finest
artifacts and relics. The building
itself is an imposing block of
concrete, but the interior is
spacious and well planned. The
four floors of the museum cover
Peruvian history from prehistoric
times through to the pre-
Columbian era, the arrival of the
Spanish and Peru’s more modern
history. The various rooms are
rearranged at times, but the basic
layout remains the same.

There are plenty of fascinating
things to see in the museum.
Ceramics, textiles and metal work
from various cultures such as the
Chimu, Huari, Moche and Inca
civilizations.
•        A fascinating selection of
Inca weapons and tools found at
various digs throughout the nation.
•        Detailed scale models of pre-
Columbian sites such as Machu
Picchu and the tomb of the Senor
de Sipan in northern Peru.
•        Paintings and artifacts from
the Spanish colonial period, the
struggle for independence and the
War of the Pacific
•        Traditional costumes from
different parts of the country
(including models highlighting
Peru’s numerous festivals).
•        Timelines mapping out the
entire progression of the nation.
Most of the exhibits are
accompanied by descriptions
given in both Spanish and English.
Museum guides are also on hand
to lead visitors around the
museum if needed. They can
provide a wealth of additional
information, again in Spanish or
English.

The top floor of the museum is
dedicated to Peru’s politically
turbulent and bloody recent
history. The effect is dramatic; the
floor is akin to an art installation
whose large photos serve as a
brutal testament to a country’s
suffering. The images, many of
which were taken by photo
journalists, depict the chaos and
tragedy unleashed upon Peru
during the height of the Shining
Path (Sendero Luminoso)
guerrillas.
