Translucent Images art is available in translucent, opaque, and clear styles. Translucent
images are intended to be displayed with a daytime light source usually behind the
painting. This arrangement allows light to filter through the work, enhancing the colors.
The appearance of each painting changes dramatically depending on the time of day as the
natural light changes. The angle of the sun, the amount of sunlight, and the position of the
viewer affect the look. The etching in the glass between sections produces highlighted
outlines of the features. When illuminated in the evening or not in front of a window, the
paintings appear as if on canvas. Opaque art is displayed with foreground lighting. Some
art contains combinations of clear, translucent, and opaque sections.

A light box could be used for illumination instead of natural light if desired.
Click the thumbnails below for larger images. All pieces are framed as shown.
Viewing translucent art:
FULL SUN: In full sunlight the natural colors will glow according to the angle of the sun. As
the sun shifts from morning to afternoon the appearance of the painting will be affected
highly. The deliberate small etched gaps in the painting allow the sunlight to filter through
brightly, thus creating prominent & distinct outlines that bring out separate parts of the
image. EVENING: During the evening with no back lighting, the paintings will appear as if on
canvas. Metallic colors reflect foreground light, sparking brightly. Non- metallic colors are
"contained" within the metallic ones, creating an enhanced mosaic pattern. In daylight
metallic paint may change its apparent color; gold may be seen as white in some light for
example. CLOUDY: In cloudy weather, the colors are soft and subdued but the small gaps
stand out clearly revealing sections of the image.

Four colors repeat to
circumscribe the pattern such that
no one color ever touches. The
photograph was taken in light in
front of a window but not brilliant
sunlight. Window pane bars are
just evident behind the painting.
A random pattern ensures the eye
does not focus long on any spot.
The photograph was taken in light
in front of a window but not
brilliant sunlight. Window pane
bars can be seen behind the work.
The random pattern gives an
appearance like a disarranged
chess board. The photograph was
taken without backlighting.
A symmetric design is
depicted.The photograph was
taken with back lighting from a
window but not in brilliant sunlight.
A window is depicted with diagonal
panes one inch square. The colors
are alternating gold and green.
The gold will appear silver in
sunlight illuminated from the rear.
When lit from front only, the gold
appears as a true golden shade.
The photograph was taken with
back lighting from a window but
not in brilliant sunlight.
This work represents a tropical
cyclone with various natural
shades. The winds rotate
clockwise around the center. The
photograph was taken with back
lighting from a window but not in
brilliant sunlight.
A diagonal playing board for a
fictional game is the subject of this
painting. The photograph was
taken without back lighting using
an incandescent foreground light
source positioned several feet
from the painting.
"2-D Topology " as seen above but
shown with foreground
incandescent lighting that change
the appearence considerably.
"Cyclone" as seen above but
shown with foreground
incandescent lighting. Note how
white is emphasized with
foreground lighting.
"Symmetry II" shown with
foreground incandescent lighting.
Note that the white is prominent
here but not in the picture shown
with back lighting.
"Enchanted Window" is shown in
foreground incandescent lighting
with the source several feet in
front of the work. A strong
diagonal pattern is seen in the
window in foreground lighting.
"Diagonal Study # 1"
Acrylic on Glass
8 by 10 inches
Foreground Lighting
A diagonal work with contrasting
gold, white, & natural earthtones.
The photograph was taken without
back lighting but in daylight. The
look will be altered considerably
when lit from behind.
"Diagonal Study # 2"
Acrylic on Glass
8 by 10 inches
Foreground Lighting
Contrasting gold, burn orange,
white, & natural earthtones
dominate this work. The
photograph was taken without
back lighting but in daylight. The
appearance of this glass painting
will change dramatically when lit
from behind.
"Enchanted Window"

Background Lighting
Photographed in daylight in front
of window. Note the window pane
bar behind the work darkens part
of the top of the window as shown
here.

pane - shadows of the bars
can be seen in the image.
"Eruption" --- Volcano

and cloud.
Background Lighting
Photographed in window
against a cloudy sky.

"Gateway"
Photographed in a window on
sunny day at 1:30 pm.
The 3 large window frames are
translucent. The background is
not translucent because of
black paint on the other side of
the glass. The stripes are
semi-translucent with paint on
both sides of glass.
Can be viewed from both front
and back with different colors.
Background will be black when
viewed from the other side.

"Gateway"
Photographed in artificial light with
no backlighting. Note the change
in appearance from translucent to
opaque with the exception of the
open windows
"Series I"
This is a mathematically oriented
work presented as a puzzle.
Can you determine what numbers
are represented?
Photographed in florescent light in
front of the work. This piece is
translucent.
16 by 20 inches
"Triple 3-D"
This work is done with three dimensions of paint- one on the front and two on the rear. The rear paint is green & brown under gloss black. The layers were used to induce opacity.
It is shown photographed against a window with a cloudy afternoon sky. Foreground lighting was used to enhance the colors. The horizontal & vertical bars of the window are seen behind the work.

"Series II"
This piece represents a famous
mathematical number series that
occurs in nature.
What is the name of this series?
How is it represented here?
Photographed in incandescent
light with the source in front of the
work. This piece is totally opaque
with a rear backing. Highly
reflective lacquer was used to
enhance the earthtone colors.
16 by 20 inches
"Symmetry"
This piece is 3-dimensional,
painted front and rear. Portions
are covered from the back to
reduce transparency.
Bright colors are translucent.
16 by 20 inches
Displayed in bright sunlight in
front of a window in afternoon.
"Symmetry"
Lighting is from the front
using artificial florescent
source. The interior
'windows' on the right are
actually identical to those
on the left but inverted. In
this photograph, reflections
obscure the true look.
"Tuscan Tiles"
This piece represents large diagonal tiles
in earth tone colors. The 'grout' of the
tiles is blacked out while the tiles are
translucent. A semi-translucent earth
tone border surrounds the diagonal tiles.
It appears nearly black when lit from
behind but its true color is seen below.
Acrylic on glass - 16 by 20 inches
Displayed in sunlight in front of window
in bring afternoon light.
"Tuscan Tiles"
Displayed in florescent lighting
from front.
"Whimsical" - Side A
The background of one side is yellow
as shown here. It is opaque to light.
The opposite side has black
background (see below).
The interior translucent colors are
blue, red, and green. The work is
shown at night with front lighting on
the yellow side (photographed at an
angle).
Acrylic on glass - 16" by 20"
"Whimsical" - Side B
This side has a black background
to be shown in daytime as
illustrated here. It is opaque to
light.
The work is shown in a window
illuminated by bright daylight. The
window light is artificially reduced
in this modified image.
"Pattern Recognition"
This depicts a number
series. Can you figure out
what series is represented?
Shown under florescent
light.
Acrylic on glass - 16" by 20"
"Ideal Numbers"
A number series is represented
here. Can you determine what
sequence is represented?
Acrylic on glass - 16" by 20"
"Multiverse" Side A
This piece represents the concept
of multiple universes. Each black
region corresponds to one
universe with unique properties.
Some universes glow with stars
while others are barren. This
corresponds to universes with and
without the necessary conditions
for stellar evolution. This side is
for viewing with no back lighting.
Acrylic on glass 16" by 20"
"Multiverse" Side B
Stars shine through the glass
when viewed from this side. It
should be away from the sun with
back lighting from the other side.
