Bring your Smartphone (IPhone for example) to Peru but be sure to turn off 3G roaming before you arrive in Lima to avoid international roaming charges! You can use your smart phone to make phone calls from Peru but you will incur international phone rates at around $1 to $2 per minute to call the USA or Europe. You can rent a local mobile phone at the Lima International airport with your own local phone number from Claro or Movistar. You will not pay international rates with this phone, you can purchase a local international phone card which is inexpensive. You will find people renting phones as you exit customs and enter the baggage area internationally. Also there are rental kiosks near the food court & departure tax area. Another possibility for international phones is to use a Peru SIM card which is available in stores. Of course, you can make international calls from your hotel room, ask the receptionist for prices. Finally, you can go to a cabina or locutorio. These stores allow you to access the internet and make international phone calls inexpensively. For example, an hour of Internet use might be about 2 soles or less than one dollar. Your hotel receptionist will know of these because they are used commonly. Many hotels in Peru catering to tourists have Wi-Fi so you can use their network to read your e-mail, browse the Internet, use Facebook, and more!
