6FD - Lima Park of Legends

We will visit the Park of Legends (Parque de
las Leyendas), a traditional zoo in Lima. It will
take a full day to tour it because it is much
more than a traditional zoo containing animals.
It combines ecology, archaeology, history,
education, botany, and animals. The zoo was
constructed inside an important pre-Hispanic
complex in Lima called the Archaeological
Complex of Maranga. Today it houses
museums, various Huacas (Adobe Pyramids),
beautiful Botanical Garden, as well as
hundreds of animals.

We will enjoy various Peruvian flora and fauna
from the three principle climatic regions of
Peru: costa, sierra and selva (coast, highlands
and jungle). We will observe animals from all
three geographic regions. The coastal region
is represented by pelicans, cormorants, sea
lions, penguins and turtles; the highlands by
llamas, vicunas, guanacos, pumas, condors
and owls; the jungle by monkeys, jaguars,
snakes, toucans, parrots, coatis and
crocodiles. We will also visit the areas
dedicated to international animals such as
lions, giraffes, hippos, zebras, buffalos, bears,
tigers and ostriches. We will drop by the “baby
zoo” where children can enjoy young animals.

You will visit pyramidal structures in the park
that were temples and burial grounds for
different indigenous pre-Hispanic Peruvian
civilizations.  We will learn about the cultures
that constructed these pyramids.

We will visit several very interesting museums
located in the park that  are focused on
Peruvian history and natural science. We will
study artifacts and mummies found in the
different religious and ceremonial centers in
the Ernest W. Middendorf museum. The we
will visit the Museo Petroleo (Petroleum
Museum), an educational exhibition about the
process of exploration and transforming crude
oil into useful derivatives. We tour ann
amazing butterfly exhibition that can be seen
at the Museo Celestino Kalinosky.  Finally we
will visit the Botanical Gardens inside de
Parque de las Leyendas, one of the biggest in
Peru with over 3200 individual plants.

The Parque de las Leyendas is a great place
to spend a day watching animals.  But we will
have a great learning experience about
Peruvian history and ancient cultures as well.
